How to Clean Your Vehicle’s Interior Carpets Like a Pro

Your vehicle’s carpets are basically the frontline soldiers of daily driving — catching dirt, crumbs, pet hair, and all sorts of unexpected messes. Step 1: Clear the Way

Start by removing all personal items and any floor mats. Shake them out thoroughly, and if they’re rubber, scrub them with a mild soap and rinse clean. Set them aside to dry.

Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly

Using a strong vacuum and a crevice tool, suck up as much loose dirt and debris as possible. Be sure to vacuum under the seats, in between them, and around the pedals. The more you remove now, the better your deep clean will be.

Step 3: Agitate with a Brush 🧽

Before applying shampoo, grab a stiff-bristle carpet brush and give the carpets a good scrub. This lifts up embedded dirt, hair, and sand that your vacuum may have missed — especially in high-traffic spots like the driver's footwell. Brushing also helps loosen fibers so your shampoo can penetrate more effectively.

Step 4: Pre-Treat Any Stains

Spray a dedicated carpet or upholstery stain remover on any spots or salt stains. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then gently work it in using your brush. For tougher stains, a second pass may be needed after shampooing.

Step 5: Shampoo & Extract

Apply a high-quality automotive carpet shampoo. Scrub gently in circular motions to lift grime and odors from the fibers. For a pro-level result, use a hot water extractor or a wet/dry vacuum to pull out the dirt and moisture.

Step 6: Dry It Out

Use microfiber towels to blot excess moisture. Then leave the windows slightly open and let the car air out. A small fan or warm day will speed up drying — and help prevent musty smells or mildew.

Once your carpets are clean and dry, consider applying a fabric protector. It creates a water-resistant barrier that makes future cleanup faster and helps keep your car looking fresh longer.
